What is your File Name Chaos Score?

What the analyzer measures

Six habits that quietly make files unfindable: version suffixes like final_v2_FINAL, competing date formats in one folder, camera and scanner default names, mixed separators, names that follow no shared pattern, and hygiene problems like 90 character file names. Each gets its own subscore, weighted into one Chaos Score.

How the scoring works

Higher means messier. Version confusion carries the most weight, because duplicate finals are the fastest way to send the wrong file. A is calm, C is an average shared drive, F means search is your filing system. The score is a heuristic about names only: it knows nothing about your folder structure and never reads what is inside a file.

Use the results with DNM

Use the analyzer's findings to choose a naming policy. Build it in the generator, import it into DNM on Windows, then add files and review suggested names before saving. The analyzer does not rename files, and importing a policy does not turn on automatic background enforcement.

What it does not do

It does not upload anything, and it cannot: the scan runs in your browser and works even offline once the page has loaded. It reads file names only, never contents. And it does not judge your folder structure, your archive habits, or that one folder called misc. Names are the part DNM can fix, so names are what it scores.

The score is a directional heuristic, not an audit. Scan the folder where your team actually works, not a curated corner, and the number will tell you more. Nothing you scan leaves your browser.
